Calcium is the most prevalent mineral in the human body.

Functions:

  • Facilitates muscle contractions
  • Stimulates hormone release, activates enzymes, and aids in nerve impulse transmission
  • Dilates/contracts blood vessels and helps with blood clotting
  • May reduce the risk of kidney stones by binding with oxalate in the gastrointestinal tract
  • May reduce the risk of obesity (low intake of dietary calcium triggers hormonal responses that shift calcium into fat cells, stimulating fat production/storage)

Recommended Daily Amount (RDA): 1000-1200 mg

Sources:

  • Dairy products
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Tofu
  • Sardines, canned salmon with bones
  • Beans and lentils
  • Almonds
  • Supplements (check with your doctor first to determine need)
